Our Story

Mum Bean (Clara) here. Hope you are keeping well. You must be wondering if I am Mum Bean, who is Little Bean? Ah, that's my daughter of course. Together we are Little Mum Bean. Last year, my husband and I were blessed with our daughter and it has been a fun, tiring and exciting journey so far. And one of the things I love to do is to read to Little Bean. Initially, she was more preoccupied with "tasting" her books but as she approaches one year old, she is beginning to flip the pages herself and showing more interest, much to the delight of my husband and I.

We are both from Malaysia, a multilingual country. My first language is Mandarin and my husband's is English. My husband himself never quite picked up Mandarin but just bits and pieces (just enough to court me as he likes to say). He has always regretted not completing his Mandarin classes. Although he is an excellent English writer and a natural public speaker, he feels that learning Mandarin would have opened up his mind to more ideas, opinions and literature expressed in Mandarin which helps in gaining new perspectives and opportunities.

This is why we feel it's important for our daughter to be bilingual and immerse herself in Asian inspired books. We would like her to relate with her Asian heritage, which will hopefully help her understand her identity as an Australian Malaysian Chinese. Trying to nurture her in a bilingual household in Australia is no easy feat, and finding Chinese resources proved to be another challenge. Therefore, I decided to start Little Mum Bean to make Chinese story books more accessible, empower parents like me to provide their little ones with the invaluable gift of bilingualism.

My aim is to provide parents and caregivers with the best curated collection of Chinese books for their little ones to kickstart their journey. Through the power of story telling and Asian inspired characters, I hope this can inspire a love for the Chinese culture and heritage in young hearts.
